Moving During the School Year Without Wrecking the Routine

Quick Answer

Pack in stages over two weeks instead of one frantic weekend, do the kids rooms last, and keep one container per child that never gets packed. The goal is that bedtime looks the same on the first night in the new house as it did in the old one.

Summer is the easy time to move with kids. No school, no schedule, and you can take a week to do it. Fall moves are a different problem. School is running, sports are running, and you are trying to fit a whole household into the hours between pickup and bedtime.

It is very doable. It just needs to be staged rather than crammed.

Do not pack the bedrooms first

The instinct is to start with the rooms that feel easiest, which usually means the kids rooms, because the stuff is small. This is backwards. A child whose room got dismantled two weeks before the move spends two weeks living in a construction site, and it shows up in their behavior long before moving day.

Pack the low traffic stuff first. Basement, attic, garage, guest room, off season clothes, the good dishes nobody uses. Then the common areas. Bedrooms last, ideally the day before.

Stage it across two weeks

This is the real argument for a 2 week rental over a rushed weekend with boxes. You are not packing a house in two days. You are doing forty five minutes after dinner, four or five nights a week, for two weeks.

A rough shape that works:

Totes help here specifically because they stack clean and stay closed. A room half packed in boxes looks like chaos for two weeks. The same room in stacked totes looks organized, and it keeps the house livable while you work through it.

One container per kid that never gets packed

Give each child one tote that stays open and comes in the car, not the truck. In it goes whatever they actually need to feel normal. The blanket. The specific stuffed animal. Two days of clothes. The headphones. Homework and whatever school needs this week.

Let them pack it themselves and let them label it. Giving a kid one thing they control in a process where they control nothing does more for the week than anything else on this list.

Tell the school early

If you are changing districts, get the records transfer started three or four weeks out. Ocean County districts are generally fine about it, but the paperwork takes as long as it takes, and the last thing you want during move week is a phone call about immunization records.

If you are staying in district, tell the office anyway. Bus routes are assigned by address, and that change is not instant.

Protect bedtime on night one

The single highest value thing you can do on moving day is set up the kids beds first, before the couch, before the television, before you unpack a single box in the kitchen. If bedtime happens at the normal time in a real bed with the right blanket, the next morning is fine. If it does not, you pay for it for three days.

Plan dinner that night as takeout. Nobody is cooking. Pick the place before you move so you are not searching for it at 7pm surrounded by containers.

The first week is the actual move

Unpacking with school in session takes longer than packing did. That is normal and it is fine. Prioritize in this order. Beds, bathrooms, kitchen basics, school and work stuff, then everything else whenever.

Since we do not need the totes back until the end of your 2 week window, you are not unpacking against a deadline. Empty them as you go, stack the empties in the garage, and we take them all at once.

If you are sizing an order, the room by room guide has the numbers. Most families in a 3 bedroom land at 60 totes, which is the $235 package.
