Moving guide
The Ocean County Moving Checklist: 4 Weeks Out to Moving Day
TL;DR
- 4 weeks out: book your totes and movers, start the purge.
- 3 weeks out: transfer utilities, file your change of address.
- 2 weeks out: we deliver your totes. Pack non-essentials first.
- 1 week out: pack daily essentials last, confirm your pickup date.
- Moving day: keep a first-night bag with you, not in a tote.
Moving within (or into) Ocean County has its own rhythm: summer shore traffic, month-end lease turnovers, and utility setups that vary by town. Here's the timeline we recommend to our rental customers.
4 weeks out: lock in the big pieces
- Book your totes. Message us your moving dates and home size. Month-end weekends book first, especially May through September.
- Reserve movers or a truck if you're not DIY-ing it. Get the certificate of insurance if your building requires one.
- Start the purge. Walk every room with three designations: move, donate, trash. Ocean County has donation drop-offs in Toms River, Brick, and Manahawkin.
- Notify your landlord in writing if you're renting, per your lease terms.
3 weeks out: handle the paperwork
- Utilities: schedule electric/gas transfer (JCP&L serves most of the county), water/sewer per your town, and internet installation. Appointments can run a week out in peak season.
- Change of address with USPS, plus banks, insurance, subscriptions, and voter registration.
- Schools and records: if you have kids, start the transfer between districts now.
- Collect important documents: keep them with you, not in a tote.
2 weeks out: tote delivery week
- We deliver your totes to your door, clean and ready.
- Pack non-essentials first: books, decor, off-season clothes, the kitchen gadgets you never touch.
- Label by room and priority. A strip of painter's tape and a marker is all you need. You'll thank yourself at 9pm on moving day.
- Confirm movers, truck, and helpers for the big day.
1 week out: the final push
- Pack daily essentials last. Leave out one week's worth of kitchen and bathroom basics.
- Defrost the freezer 24 to 48 hours before the move.
- Pack a "first night" bag: chargers, toiletries, medications, bedding, toilet paper, snacks, and a change of clothes.
- Confirm your pickup date with us so we can schedule the tote collection.
Moving day
- Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, and cabinet before the truck leaves.
- Keep totes upright and stacked. Lids latch, but gravity still wins arguments.
- Hand over keys, grab meter readings, and take photos of the empty place.
After the move
Unpack at your pace. That's the beauty of a 2 week rental. When you're done, we pick up the empty totes. Nothing to break down, nothing to recycle, no cardboard mountain in the garage.
Start with the totes.
