7 Questions to Ask Before You Rent Moving Totes: What to Plan For
Moving tote rentals look similar until you compare the details. Ask what is included, how long you get, what extra time costs, what happens if something breaks, and whether they actually serve your town. Below are the seven questions worth asking any company, with our answers next to each one.
Renting totes instead of buying cardboard is an easy call for most moves. Picking who to rent from takes a little more thought, because the headline price rarely tells the whole story. These are the questions that actually change what you pay and how smooth the week goes.
1. Are delivery and pickup included?
Some services quote a low price per tote and add delivery and pickup on top, which can change the math quickly. Ask for the total, door to door.
Our answer: delivery and pickup are included in every package, anywhere in Ocean County and Monmouth County.
2. How long is the rental, and what does extra time cost?
Closings slide and unpacking always takes longer than planned. You want to know the extension price before you need it, not after.
Our answer: every package is a full 2 weeks. Extra weeks are a flat rate per package, from $45 for a Studio up to $95 for a 5 Bedroom. Just tell us before your scheduled pickup.
3. How many totes do I actually need?
Too few and you are back at the store for boxes. Too many and you paid for empties. A good company should help you size it.
Our answer: a studio usually needs about 20 totes, a 2 bedroom about 40 and a 3 bedroom about 60. Basements, garages and big kitchens push you up a tier. The room by room guide walks through it.
If you do run short mid move, we can bring more. Extra totes are prorated at your package rate, plus a small drop off fee based on location.
4. Are the totes cleaned between rentals?
You are putting dishes, linens and kids clothes in these. It is a fair thing to ask.
Our answer: every tote is sanitized between rentals. You do not have to clean them before pickup, just empty them.
5. What happens if a tote is lost or damaged?
Find out the replacement cost and what counts as damage before move day, so there are no surprises on the final bill.
Our answer: normal wear from a move is expected. A lost or badly damaged tote is $35. A missed pickup is a $65 trip fee, so we confirm the pickup window with you ahead of time.
6. How much notice do you need?
If you are booking around a closing date, lead time matters, especially in summer and at the end of the month.
Our answer: at least 24 hours. A week or two ahead is safer for summer Saturdays and month end.
7. Do you actually deliver to my town?
A lot of companies list a wide area and then add a distance fee or decline the job once you call. Ask about your exact town.
Our answer: we cover Ocean County and Monmouth County, with dedicated pages for 30 towns from Barnegat to Holmdel.
One more to ask yourself: do you need a dolly?
Stairs, a long driveway or a building with a long hallway all make a dolly worth it. Ours is $10 per dolly for the rental, and it lets you roll a stack of loaded totes instead of carrying them one at a time.
