Toms River is the county seat and our home base. Parkway Exits 80, 81 and 82 all land here, and Route 37 over the Mathis and Tunney bridges is the main way to the barrier beaches, which means summer backups. Ortley Beach and the rest of the Toms River barrier island were hit hard by Sandy, and a lot of homes there were rebuilt and raised.
Brick, Point Pleasant, Bay Head and Mantoloking are bridge country. The Mantoloking Bridge is a drawbridge, the Point Pleasant Canal has two lift bridges, and Route 35 through Bay Head is just two lanes. Expect stairs at a lot of raised homes, and pick a weekday in summer.
Lakewood is the most populous town in the county and still growing fast. Jackson covers about 100 square miles, with Six Flags traffic in the warmer months. Manchester has no highway of its own and a long list of large 55 and over communities.
Lagoons and the bay shape moves down here. Lacey lists tidal flooding in its lagoon neighborhoods, Parkway Exit 74 in Forked River is only a partial interchange, and in Stafford Route 72 is the only road onto Long Beach Island. Barnegat has a long list of adult communities west of Route 9.
Ocean County is full of active adult communities: Leisure Village in Lakewood, Crestwood Village and Leisure Village West in Manchester, Westlake and Four Seasons at Metedeconk in Jackson, Pheasant Run and Sea Breeze in Lacey, Heritage Bay in Barnegat, and Holiday City in Berkeley. Our downsizing guide covers these moves.
JCP&L handles electric for most of Ocean County, but much of Stafford is on Atlantic City Electric, so confirm yours when you set up service. Gas across the county is New Jersey Natural Gas. Several towns, like Manchester, run their own water and sewer.
All of them. Our most requested towns are Toms River, Brick, Lakewood, Jackson, Manchester, Barnegat, Lacey, Stafford, Point Pleasant, Bay Head, and Mantoloking, and we deliver county wide.
